Battle Scars
Theo has suffered his first battle scar as a toddler. Today, he fell off the couch, and split his eyelid area open. Of course, this all happened just as we needed to leave the house to pick up Emma from school. Theo was bleeding profusely, and screaming his little head off. I was trying to clean the laceration, assess it, and put ice on it all at the same time. Needles to say, this was about as successful as bathing a cat.
I managed to get a band-aid on it and we were off.
We drove out to Valencia (about 30 miles North) to play at my friend, Lisa's, new Gymboree Play and Music center. The kids had a great time, and all was well, until Theo brushed his band-aid, and blood came spilling out. I cleaned it up, and he seemed fine. After dinner at "Old MacDonald's", we ran by Lisa's house for a quick potty break/diaper change, and to pick up a photo before heading back home. I also wanted to change Theo's bandage. We managed to get the band-aid off, and clean the wound, and it was obvious he needed a stitch.
I truck off to the Urgent Care center by Lisa's, which was closed...8 minutes earlier than they should have been, mind you, so I call our pediatrician. She was in Santa Monica, and would be able to meet us at her office, but not for another 2-3 hours, so she suggested I call the Pediatric Urgent Care center by us, and see how much they would charge. It would have cost about $400, not to mention they would have to sedate Theo, and call in a plastic surgeon.
I started crying to the woman on the phone, looking at my sleeping baby in his car seat, and seeing his new band-aid becoming soaked with blood. I had Emma with me, and Tim was at work (and still is...won't be home until 4am, I'm sure), and the thought of sitting in an emergency room with my 3.5 year old, and Theo, was too much.
I called my Pediatrician back, and told her what was going on, and said she would meet me at her office in 25 minutes. She is amazing, people, I am so lucky! Not only does this woman make house calls (yes, this is true), but she'll leave a party, and open her office up at 9:45pm. She's the BEST!
I called Bruce (who has come to my rescue on more than one occassion) and he said he'd come with me, or stay with Emma, what ever would help. I picked him up so he could come to the office with me and help with Emma and Theo.
Dr. Alison glued his wound shut, covered it with steri-strips and we were off. Without spending a dime. I love her.
I have no idea how single parents do it. They are my heros!
So a HUGE thanks to Lisa, Bruce and Dr. Alison!
