Permit Hell
I hate the LA Building and Safety people! I swear, you try to do the right thing...follow the rules, and it just bites.
I think I mentioned in a previous post how it took me 4 hours to get the permits for our kitchen remodel. Anyway, we're all set to go yesterday morning for our first inspection (yes, I said first. yes, this has been going on for a month, now). My contractor (who is awesome!) is going over the paperwork with me, etc., and I happen to notice that the address is incorrect on our permit. Why I had not seen this before....ughh... So we have to cancel the inspection, and I got to go to the Building and Safety office AGAIN to get this straightened out. I was about to spit nails, I was so pissed. It was the last day before the kids were on Summer break, and I was hoping to use my time without them to prepare for our 2 week trip to Alabama (as we leave on Saturday). I show up to the office, get assigned a number and the ping-pong game of bouncing from person to person begins. 3.5 hours later, (they realized it was a department error, so thankfully I did not have to pay for this permit) I walk out with my NEW permit. Everything is correct...or so I thought.....
After running around trying to finish my long list of errands, I end up at Home Depot, and while waiting for the door guy (we're getting a new front door) to get off his break, I called to schedule our inspections for today. I'm going down the list of what we need: framing, insulation, electric and plumbing....and I could not schedule electric and plumbing! The only reason we pulled permits on this job was for the plumbing and electric so that we could list our new half batroom in the MLS listings. I was pissed. I called our contractor, and he said not to worry, that we'd just explain to the inspector that there was some sort of problem and could he just check the electric and plumbing. Ughh...I did not have another 3.5 hours to spend at the permit office AGAIN!
Cut to today: The inspector was very sympathetic (thank GOD because usually, they are not), told me not to worry, that he would see to it that everything is corrected. We passed inspection, thankfully, and everything looks good to go. Oh, and this inspector said that our contractor was the best he had seen! His attention to detail is stellar. So, we're moving forward, hoping to have this kitchen/bath complete in 10 more days. I just hope the inspector can fix this, so I can avoid going back to the permit office again. I would hate to have gone through all this crap only to have all this work not show up as being permitted. Sheesh.
