Hot Topic #1 - Abortion
I consider myself Pro-Life, I am not Anti Abortion. I do not care for the label "Pro-Choice", and I think a better description of the current stance "Pro-Life" is Anti-Abortion.
I lost my virginity the summer before I turned 19. I was raped. I am thankful that I didn't become pregnant. I shudder to think of women prior to Roe Vs Wade. Where did they turn when they were victims of non-consensual sex and wound up pregnant? Do we want to go back to back alley abortions?
I do not feel abortion should be used as "birth control". I also think that 10-12 weeks is ample time to decide what choice you'll make regarding your pregnancy, therefore I do not support late term abortion. However, I absolutely uphold a woman's right to choose. May not be my choice, but my life is different than yours. I have a support system, a loving caring husband, health insurance, money, etc... I live in a state with incredible (FREE!) programs for children born with special needs. Do you know the percentage of babies born with Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other non-life threatening special needs put up for adoption that actually get adopted? I don't know that number. I would not choose to abort my fetus if I discovered it had one of the afore mentioned disabilities, however I'm me. That would be MY CHOICE. I cannot judge someone else for their choice... for I don't know their story or situation.
Listed below is the stance of each of the 4 nominees for the Nov. 4th, 2008 election. I've heard from friends that they have greater concerns than "Row Vs. Wade being repealed, than Gay Rights being upheld, than the environment, etc."
I implore you to read the following stances of each politician. All information and quotes listed comes from a non-partisan website. If you ARE NOT anti-abortion, how can you vote for McCain/Palin? An estimated 3 SEATS ON THE SUPREME COURT WILL BE OPEN DURING THE NEXT 4 YEARS!! McCain and Palin strongly support OVERTURNING ROW VS. WADE.
If you do not want to see back alley, unhealthy, illegal abortions becoming our reality... if you do not want to carry a child to term if you are the victim of rape, if you do not want your mothers, your sisters, your daughters, your friends to lose the ability to make a choice based on their situation, then vote Obama/Biden. If you want to risk the women in your life to not have a choice, then vote McCain/Palin.

OBAMA
Sponsored bill to provide contraceptives to low income women
"On an issue like partial birth abortion, I strongly believe that the state can properly restrict late-term abortions. I have said so repeatedly. All I've said is we should have a provision to protect the health of the mother, and many of the bills that came before me didn't have that."
OBAMA'S PLAN
Protecting a Women's Right to Choose: Obama will make safeguarding women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn that decision.
Reducing Unintended Pregnancy: Obama will work to reduce unintended pregnancy by guaranteeing equity in contraceptive coverage, providing sex education, and offering rape victims accurate information about emergency contraception.
MCCAIN'S
*you may want to visit this website yourself because I found numerous contradictions regarding McCain's stance on Abortion. In some quotes he says "he would absolutely not support a reversal of Roe VS Wade because of fear of illegal abortions and the dangers associated w/ them, later was quoted saying RvsW should be reversed, then another time he said "If RvW was reversed during his presidency, he would not support States performing legal abortions, but would want the women to bring the children into the world. Then this was said "A spokesman said that McCain “has a 17-year voting record of supporting efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade. He does that currently, and will continue to do that as president.”
I could not find a non-partisan explanation of McCain's plan. I did find that he opposes sex education and access to contraceptives.
BIDEN:
"I strongly support Roe v. Wade. I wouldn't have a specific question but I would make sure that the people I sent to be nominated for the Supreme Court shared my values; and understood that there is a right to privacy in the United States Constitution. That's why I led the fight to defeat Bork, Roberts Alito, and Thomas."
He does want to ban Partial Birth Abortion w/out overturning Roe V Wade
Biden co-sponsored ensuring access to and funding for contraception
A bill to expand access to preventive health care services that help reduce unintended pregnancy, reduce abortions, and improve access to women's health care
PALIN
She is opposed to abortion except to save the life of the mother.
Choose life, even if her own daughter were raped
I am pro-life. With the exception of a doctor's determination that the mother's life would end if the pregnancy continued.
"On one side of the debate, some oppose providing contraceptive information to teenagers. They just want teens to abstain until they are married. Gov. Sarah Palin is among that group. In response to a questionnaire during Alaska's gubernatorial race, Palin said, "I am opposed to explicit sex education." (taken from an interview from NPR, linked from her Wikipedia bio)
(Yeah, we've seen how well the "abstinence only" teachings have worked. Would I prefer my children to wait until they are out of college to have sex? Of course. Do I think they will? Who knows, but I'll be damned if Emma doesn't know how to use a condom, how to respond to the bull-shit boys are going to say to her just to get her pants off, how she should wait, but if she can't/won't, then we need to discuss birth control, and she'll be getting the HPV Vaccine. And Theo will also know how to use a condom, and not to ever believe a girl who says she's "on the pill". They'll know the responsibilities that come with entering a sexual relationship, and that abstinence is the only 100% guarantee you will not get pregnant or get a STD...)

100% agree with your thoughts on abortion. I knew I would. I told you, I'm socially a liberal. If all other things were equal and this was the only difference between Obama and McCain, I would no doubt cast my vote for Obama. To me though, there are other issues that are equally important to me. It's just not so easy to vote on one issue alone. And I think any President would be up for a hard fight overturning Roe v. Wade.
Hey, Jacq! What are the issues you're most concerned about? Keep in mind the Supreme Court Justices who are on the court now, and if the McCain/Palin are longing to have RvW repealed, it's a true possibility. My next "hot topic" is a toss up between foreign policy, economy and gay rights. And please let me know the issues that concern you the most!
Keep in mind that partial birth abortions used to not exist in the medical literature. (And I'm not sure if the term exists now.) It was a term created by pro-life groups to make an issue of a very rare procedure. (Though pro-lifers tend to inflate these figures.)
Even so, I'm against restrictions even for partial birth abortions, I've had friends who show up at their 20-week ultrasound only to find out that their baby doesn't have a brain or kidneys or anything but an extremely defective heart. These babies will be born stillborn -- they just don't know when. Two of my friends elected to abort -- an extremely stressful and heartbreaking decision for them -- rather than carry their babies until they die on their own.
God forbid I was in this horrible situation, but I'd hate to be the one to force another mother to carry a baby with a fatal defect to term.
Very true, Anjali! You have now changed my stance on "partial birth" abortions. I think the anti-abortionists need to realize that abortion is not an easy decision. It comes with it's own feelings and emotions of heart break and disappointment. (I know there are exceptions.) just another reason to vote Obama/Biden. As I mentioned in my previous response, McCain has mentioned on one than more occasion that "Repealing Row Vs. Wade will be a priority in his presidency"
Kelley...I would say I am most concerned with the economy, health care and foreign policy right now...so take your pick. And these are issues that I still have a lot to learn about so I will remain open to your thoughts...although I think this is where we may disagree. I'm definitely not on the fence with gay rights. One of the strongest "unions" I have ever seen was (and still is) between two males. Without hesitation, I will say that I believe the two of them deserve every single right and privilege I have with my husband. Although the issue of homosexuality gets a little tough for me in the context of my religious beliefs, I choose to let God sort that out...in the same way I assume he will sort out my sins.
